Forget this being something for the coffee table, this book is to be savoured and every detail poured over. Written by Savile Row figure-head James Sherwood, and featuring a foreword by Mr Tom Ford, this is a complete pictoral history of 'The Golden Mile'. Featuring all of the major tailoring houses on the street, as well as some lesser known names in and around the Mayfair area of London, I literally can't put this down! With accomapanying written texts, the book is brimming with some of the most stunning photo's I've ever seen in a fashion publication- Tailoring through the ages as well as some familiar faces that have worn it best. Anyone with even a fleeting interest, or aspiration, towards tailoring needs this in their life. I know I do.

Needless, but worthy, mention is that Steve McQueen had all his suits for 'The Thomas Crown Affair' made by Douglas Hayward in Mayfair. Just in case you were wondering....

Thanks for all the questions and feedback I've had regarding the blog. Always noted and appreciated. I've recently once again been asked a common question, something simple that has cropped up a couple of times over the last few months, so thought I'd tackle it right here;

"Hi there Matt, have just come across your website today and was very impressed and interested in what I read. I stumbled across your site while looking for some information, or rather inspiration for an up and coming family wedding. I am going to be wearing a slim cut 2 button grey suit (I have opted for this as I wear navy suits at work and do not favour black for these occasions). I wanted to wear a burgundy knitted tie and also a pocket square. My question to you is this; Will the burgundy tie work with the suit, do I have 2 match the pocket square to the tie and if not what would you suggest? Finally, should I go with another colour shirt (light blue) or should I stick to White?"

So, in my opinion a white shirt is a safe, simple and classic choice. Easy. Yes burgundy works with light blue shades as well, but if this is you're choice you will have to be creative with what you wear in your breast pocket. My advice? Stick to white with a double cuff and throw on a knitted or club stripe tie for a point of interest. As for the pocket square, do NOT match to your tie- Never a good look. Keep the tones in the same colour palette, but instead why not try to match your tie with your socks, cufflinks or anything else that doesn't look to 'try-hard'.

If you wanted something a little more fun with a touch of flair, why not try a splash of paisley....

Oh, and don't forget if you're wearing a 3-piece, be prepared with something to put in your waist-coat pocket....You know the jackets always come off at a wedding!

The 'Herringbone' blazer....

A pattern? A texture? Either way, 'Herringbone' is a commonly used term across many menswear collections. I'm of the opinion that it's best applied to over-coats, blazers and (at times) tailoring. With a retro appeal that is perfect for the colder months, I wear mine with pretty much anything- Dress it up or dress it down. Oh, for future reference, the term 'Herringbone' derives from the patterns resemblance of a herring's spine. Fact.

I've chosen to finsih the look off with some heavy brogues (It's cold outside) and some burgundy Fair-Isle socks. Easy.

The Perfect Combination....

For the last time this year I wanted to bring out one of my favourite combinations, with a twist. Navy suits, im my humble opinion, were made to be worn with burgundy accessories- Ties, pockets squares, socks ANYTHING! In this instance I'm going for a single breasted wool number with peaked lapel and fine pin-stripe worn with a classic white (double-cuff) shirt and burgundy knitted tie. The weave of the tie adds a bit of texture to the soft wool making the outfit appear more slick, stylish and nonchalantly considered, rather than stiff, stuffy and contrived....Which is never a good look, clothes should be enjoyed and worn. The only thing in this instance that should be stiff and lifeless is the white pocket square rounding of the ensemble in my breast pocket. Nice.

The thing I love most about wearing something like this is that it truly is classic and timeless. If you saw the look shot in black and white, its hard to tell what era it was taken! Or perhaps thats just me STILL trying to be on Madison Avenue in the 1960's....

Hello. Just thought I would justify my lack of posts and updates to the blog in recent weeks. The reason is simple; NO INTERNET. I've very recently moved house and into an abyss-like state of communication. Frustrating as I've had so many wonderful style related things to share with you....BUT I'm back and will, at the very least, get the back log of posts up and running for you to have a look at.

Thanks for your perseverance and patience, I wish you all a fantastic Christmas and happy New Year. Trust me, I have some very special stuff lined up for 2012....

A casual day out with the Keds 'Booster'....

Matt, what do you wear on your 'down' days? Do you wake up and sleep in a suit or blazer? Do you....Ok, you get the point. Contrary to my taste and preference for tailoring and 'smart' dressing, I DO actually own a pair of jeans SHOCK HORROR!!! In fact, if I'm honest, I practically live in them. With that said I do still like my denim to fit like a well-cut pair of trousers; Slim (Not skinny), dark (Not distressed) and finished with a cuff or one break on whatever shoe I'm wearing. With this criteria in mind, I always opt for Levi's 511 in dark indigo. Perfect smart, perfect casual, perfect for a winter day out in the park....With this in mind, there's always the issue of footwear- As mentioned in previous posts, it's clear that I favour my trusty brogues to cover any smart/casual needs, dark brown or black Oxfords's for formal occasions and Sperry deck shoes for the warmer months. KEDS recently sent me a pair of Mark McNairy designed 'Booster' shoes ticking all the boxes for my casual winter footwear conundrum. Based on the original design from the 1930's, the 'Booster' is constructed in durable hopsack canvas with a colour pop sole giving it a preppy, sporty kick! I'll leave the rest to the pro's....

As for what personally draws me to them, just check out the neutral colour way and contrast sole allowing me to add a touch of personality into my more casual ensemble- In this case the socks and pocket square (Yes, I ALWAYS wear one)....

Yes its been a while sinced any updates, news or pictures have graced these pages- For this I apologise, but wth that said my recent re-location means a LOT more exciting photo-shoots, style posts and general sartorial musings are very soon to come. Thanks for your support and perseverance- Keep reading, I look forward to your feedback and suggstions on the work I' soon going to be bringing to 'The Gents Dresser'....

Lets get the ball rolling by sharing with you one of the items this season I literally couldn't live without- The roll neck. Over the next few days I will share with you my favourite looks, and style suggestions, for this versatile piece of knitwear.

Why wear a roll neck with a suit?

- A great replacement for a shirt and tie combination. Great when travelling by rail or road- No more creases!
- Don't compromise on warmth and sharp style this season, the roll neck offers a simple, clean and elegant silhouette when worn with tailoring.
- Also....Quite simply, it looks GREAT!

Firstly, SORRY for the perpetual lack of posts and updates over the last 3 weeks. My schedule has rendered me incapable of any photography or writing. That said, I have still been flexing my creative muscles and the fruits will be seen right here over the next few weeks. I appreciate your perserverance....

Last week I was delighted to spend some time in London with the REISS team as we geared up for 'Mens Day' at Fashion week. Being a first timer at Somerset House I was open minded regards what to expect, but the atmosphere and volume of stylish and welcoming people was amazing! The full report with the REISS team, including photography by our very own Caroline Sodergren, can be seen here.

After hours of editing through about 100 shots from last wednesday (Some good, some not so good), I'm pleased to share with you some of the very stylish, and familiar, faces I captured last wednesday....

Burberry at it's very best! The orange colour pop picks the tones of the suit out perfectly.

A Weekend Conundrum....

The run-up to the weekend saw a good question posed regarding blazers worn with denim shirts. For me this look transcends seasons and is the perfect solution when looking for the perfect smart/ casual ensemble.

Hi Matt,

I really like the outfit you put together of the 'Thorn' Blazer and Reiss Chambray shirt from AW10 and SS11 respectively and it is a look i want to wear this weekend :)

What trousers/jeans did you choose to accompany them, i was thinking my APC petit standard denims with some dark suede brogues (huntington reiss) that i picked up for a bargain £35 in the Reiss sale :) or alternatively some navy chinos.

The guys over at Mr Porter seem to think that dressing up denim will be huge this AW so seems like you're one step ahead of the game...as ever. Also i'm going to wearing a lot of suede footwear so thought the shoes represented somewhat of a bargain.

In response to Darren, I would suggest slim, clean denim for a cool weekend look- I personally wear LEVI'S 511 in dark Indigo (view at MY-WARDROBE here), but APC 'New Standard' (view at 'Mr Porter here) are great as well. If you were thinking of the denim shirt worn in a more formal environment, why not go for a knitted tie in classic navy or burgundy red? The texture on denim looks great and certainly makes a subtle statement style wise. As for the footwear? My choice would be a 'well-worn', but niceley polished, brogue- Alternatively you could opt for a smart suede loafer or casual deck shoe. Whatever you wear on your feet will change the entire look of a blazer and denim shirt so think about the impression you are wanting to give.

Late August means the nights are drawing in, our favourite brands are boasting AW/11 collections and we inevitably start thinking of our new season essentials. The problem? Well, it is STILL August and relatively warm so I advise simply adding hints of texture to your outfit- A nod to the impending Autumn if you wish. So with that said, where better to start than with your neckwear and this corduroy tie from 'Aubin & Wills'. A great transitional addition, and at £35 certailnly won't break the bank....

Every year, as spring descends, I start to think about my summer wardrobe. Apparel and shoes aside, the accessories (as always) require the most consideration- Namely sunglasses! Personally I feel that your eyewear says as much about you, if not more, than your shoes, pocket square or watch. If chosen wisely, your sunglasses can last you a very long time and work in perfect unison with wherever your style takes you. This year I wanted my latest addition to be classic, stylish, timeless and cool- I set out in search of some 'Persol' 714 frames. Regular readers will already be aware of my love-affair with these glasses, but how I came about getting them was also half the fun!

I came across the frame of choice at PRET-A-VOIR but, as I've never worn 'Persol' before, had a few questions regards size/ fit etc. Now, I have to add that some may find purchasing sunglasses online something of a minefield- I had no such problem! After speaking to an advisor, my personal taste and style explained, I was told that PRET-A-VOIR had recently been in receipt of the very limited Steve McQueen Edition (More here) and was thrilled to be told they were readily available in my size and frame colour....Oh, they also include the blue lens as featured in 'The Thomas Crown Affair'.

Without gushing too much, the advice and swift service I received was first rate! Having never purchased shades online before, I couldn't be anymore impressed when my 'Persol' glasses arrived the very next day! But why do I love these sunglasses so much? Allow me to explain in 5 easy ways;
1. Steve McQueen spent most of his life on and off screen wearing them. That alone is reason enough.
2. They look great in a variety of frame and lens colours (Available here).
3. They fold! Great for travel, storage or just pure convenience! Lovely embossed leather pouch included as well!
4. All 'Persol' frames are handcrafted in Italy.
5. Did I mention Steve McQueen wore them?

As well as the SM714 model, PRET-A-VOIR boast a full range of 'Persol' 714 folding frames in several other versatile frame and lens colours here! I personally favour the Dark Havana with Crystal Green lens....

One pair of sunglasses is good, but two or three is even better. By investing in some classic, staple styles that have stood the test of time, you can breathe new life into almost any outfit. Another popular choice, and one I personally hold quite dear is 'Ray-Ban'. The model? It would have to be the 'Clubmaster'. Check out the extensive range and colour choice here. I feel these glasses look back to the easy cool of 'Jazz-era' late 1950's and early 1960's- I'm thinking of Miles Davis whilst pounding the pavements of Madsion Avenue in New York City like Don Draper! I tend to wear the tortoise shell model with crystal green lens for versatility....Great worn with tailoring as well as a laid back summer ensemble!

And finally, whilst on the subject of 'Ray-Ban', you can never go far wrong with the timeless shape of the classic 'Wayfarer'. Iconic and cool, this frame has seen a resurgence of late and is readily available in that many colours you are seriously spoilt for choice! Take your pick here. Again I tend to wear the darker Havana colour- Purely for versatility, I find this shade fits in well with practically anytrhing I wear.

John F. Kennedy and Bob Dylan always looked great sporting the classic 'Wayfarer'....

Regardless of the season, whenever it comes to updating my collection of sunglasses, I will be in touch with PRET-A-VOIR. A Very Special Store....

This week saw the launch of a new and exciting concept store from REISS. With the launch of 'Made To Measure' tailoring in the city of Leeds, it is my pleasure to introduce you to this amazing new store....

Situated in the city's 'Victoria Quarter' I found myself walking through the very grandiose 'Cross Arcade', a timeless space originally built by theatre architect Frank Matcham in 1900.

Passing some amazing bistro's and coffee shops, and situated alongside leading brands including Louis Vuitton, Paul Smith and Harvey Nichols, is the new REISS 'Mens Store' in full bloom.

Alex, the REISS tailoring manager, launched the store on monday. You can read about his inspirations and sartorial endevaours here.

The outside of the store really does speak volumes! Adorning the main window is a fantastic collage of inspirations past and present- Miles Davis, Jack Keroauc, Steve McQueen, Marlon Brando and David Bowie to name just a few. These images struck a chord with me- The tailoring range within really does reference and respect the past, yet is continually looking forward to suit the modern gent's lifestyle from day to day.

Tools of the trade....

It goes without saying that all the guys who work at the store looked great- All of them well tailored with a splash of personality in each of their ensembles. Walking past the store, the staff themselves are eye-catching, friendly, knowledgable and a genuine pleasure to hang out with. Meet the gents....

Unlikely Style Icon?....

One of my favourite films has to be 'Withnail And I', written by Bruce Robinson based on his own experiences of living in a squalid Camden Town flat; The story focuses on the strained friendship between two down and out actors living at the close of 1960's London on a diet of alcohol and pills. The pair take a trip to the Lake District to 'rejuvenate' in the countryside and all hell breaks loose as they host eccentric uncles and get stalked by a psychotic poacher. Asides from a fantastic script (full of classic one-liners) and great performances, I always think Richard E. Grant's character looks as if he could of stepped straight of any Autumn/Winter catwalk. True, Withnail is an alcoholic thesbian with little regard for family, friends or seemingly personal hygiene- BUT as stated when challenged regarding his tailored ensemble at the beginning of he film, he can clearly appreciate the mark of a good suit....

"Old suit? This suit was cut by Hawke's of Saville row. Just because the best tailoring you've ever seen is above your fucking appendix doesn't mean anything".

Tweed, layers and boots all thrown together with a scruffy, yet somwehat suave, dandy twist. As the weather turns crisp in a month or so, perhaps it will be 'Withnail And I' you will be looking to for a dash of autumnal inspiration....

When It's hot....

In what seems to be a perma-climate of grey or damp weather, in England we are usually granted a few weeks a year of sun and warm temperatures. The beauty of this is that we too get to have fun with are summer wardrobes, making use of chino's, lightweiht blazers and tailored shorts etc. Come July though, I get the urge to get on a plane and head for the sun- Which is where I've been for the last two weeks (Sorry for the lack of updates- Urgent break needed!).
Depending on the location, I like to travel quite light- A selection of shirts (linen and cotton), Polo's ('Ralp Lauren' is casual/smart enough for any occasion), 'Sperry' deck shoes, slip-on plimsolls, versatile sunglasses ('Persol' or 'Ray-Ban') and tailored shorts for every occasion. A holiday is different to a 'break'. If its a weekend away then LOOK OUT! because it will be suits, blazers and shoes in abundance- But I like a holiday to be relaxing, and that goes with hand in hand with my wardrobe.
This year I spent some time in my girlfriends family villa outside of Fethiye on the south coast of Turkey- As always a great time was had by all and I hope to be back soon. I wasn't as 'snap happy' as usual with my camera this year but here are some of my summer choices....

My 'Persol' 714 SM glasses were put to good use. Simple polo shirt and statement glasses.

Linen short sleeves and tailored shorts- Comfortable and easy. Hits of tan leather give the outfit a bit of interest.

Sand coloured chino's. NEVER leave home without them....

My Custom-Fit 'Ralph Lauren' polo is an absolute must. Casual enough for an afternoon out and smart enough for dinner. Perfect.

....And as always my 'better half' who doesn't even have to try!

I promise, contrary to as it may seem at the moment, this blog is NOT dedicated soley to Steve McQueen. It is however dedicated to mens style past and present, and unarguably the great man in question is a huge part of that. I wanted to share with you a book I recently purchased; 'Steve McQueen' by William Claxton (1927-2008). Claxton was a photographer famously known for capturing jazz-era icons like Chet Baker, as well as models and actors throughout his life- McQueen being one of his biggest subjects. It truly is an amazing collection of photographs from the 1960's both off and on set, with family, friends and loved ones- A great addition to your bookcase or coffee table.

"One time when I was with him, he drove a brand new Ford convertible, with only thirty miles on the speedometer, at top speed for such a long stretch of the Texas highway that the engine began to smoke and eventually caught on fire. This week I received something quite special- My Limited Edition Steve McQueen PERSOL 714 sunglasses! Worn originally in 'The Thomas Crown Affair' (1968), Mr McQueen always preferred his custom made blue lens glasses with dark Havana frame, these really are a true design classic. Hand-crafted in Italy, the quality of these sunglasses is phenomenal and must be handled to truly appreciate. I intend to wear these ALL summer long- Great with a tailored suit and polished brogues as well as shorts and deck shoes for the beach year after year. A timeless, stylish and luxurious addition to any gentlemans wardrobe!

I recently recieved an enquiry regards a REISS S/S11 favourite, the 'Brasco' blazer;

"I really like the look that you've posted on your blog with the white jeans, chambray shirt and navy blazer. I have the chambray shirt and I am looking to invest in the jeans soon. I purchased the 'Brasco' Blazer from the previous AW collection and wore it in a similar way to the lookbook at the time i.e green trousers and sand military shirt. Despite being a big fan of this look I have found it more difficult to incorporate the Brasco blazer into other looks. Do you think it would work with the chambray shirt and white jeans, could you also suggest any other ways to get more wear out of the blazer?"

Darren poses a good question that is simple to answer- A well fitting blue or grey blazer can be worn with everything, within reason of course! Here is a great look fom Vik wearing the 'Brandon' one button blazer. A typically formal item can be given a casual spin by rolling the chino's, wearing a fresh pair of 'Chuck Taylors' and throwing a simple crew neck t-shirt underneath instead of a shirt.

The woven leather belt, polka dot pocket square and espresso (thanks to Carluccio's) are just the finishing touches!

Hand made in Italy, the 714 model by Persol has to be the most stylish addition to anyones eyewear collection. The name derives from the Italian phrase 'Per-Il-Sole' that translates as 'For the sun' and is recognised by the trademark 'arrow' emblem on the hinge. Steve McQueen wore the 714 folding model, notably in 'The Thomas Crown Affair', as well as the Italian Icon Marcello Mastroianni showcasing the 649 (non-folding) version in 'La Dolce Vita'.

On Saturday the sun was shining with little chance of rain, so I decided to step out in white jeans for the first time this year. Worn with a pair of 'Amaretto' Sperry deck shoes, textured blue shirt anchored down with a navy blazer. This makes the perfect day-to-evening spring/summer outfit, great for an occasion as well as dinner with friends. As for me? I don't need an excuse to wear it....

The Ray Ban 'Clubmaster' sunglasses add a touch of flair here!

Keep the jeans 'slim' fitting and the hem a little more cropped than usual. Roll them up!

The blazer is the key piece here. Cropped and slim for a flattering and contemporary silhouette, the flash of white in my breast pocket balances the contrast of dark and light shades that I'm wearing, hence drawing the outfit together.

The Sperry 'Top-sider'....

My choice of footwear across the Spring/Summer months. In 1935 Paul Sperry, a keen boater, watched his dog slide across a patch of ice whilst out for a walk. Always concerned with slipping on the wet deck of his boat, the grooves and grip on his dogs paw inspired the herringbone like grooves we see on this iconic shoe present day! In 1939 the U.S Army bought the right to produce the shoe for the sailors before being marketed across the whole country, soon followed by the world!

History lesson over, not only is this shoe a great representation of 'Ivy' style but it truly is ridiculously comfortable. Wear without socks and the leather moulds to your foot. I personally dress my 'Top-sider' deck shoes with chino's, shorts, slim jeans and trousers for laid back cool!

Spring time always affords me the chance to wear my clothes with a new bold sense of style! I know what I like to wear on a daily basis, but my usually quite 'tailored' image can be adapted in other directions when the sun shines. I have already stated this week that the Chambray/ Denim shirt is a great summer staple, well now is the time for white denim to make an appearance! White jeans are a great and versatile addition to any mans summer wardrobe- What could possibly look better with a navy blazer and 'Sperry' deck shoes?

Below are my considerations for styling white denim this season;

- Wear any shade of pink or blue shirt for a perfect relaxed and care-free ensemble.

- Paired with ocean bound stripes you can't fail to hit the mark this season with this classic look.

- Navy blazer, knitted tie and white shirt. I don't need to say anymore about this one.

- Footwear? Easy- A pair of 'Sperry' Topsider's' or some nicely worn in tan brogues!

- When it comes to accessories keep it simple, but you can't go far wrong with a woven belt in brown or navy.

- When considering the fit of your jeans I would always tend towards a SLIM fit. Not skinny or relaxed, just somewhere inbetween like a well cut pair of trousers. Unlike darker shades or indigo blue jeans, keep the length a little shorter so that they have little or no break. The shorter leg looks infinitely more elegant as well as looking better when going 'sockless' with your deck shoes! N.B I think Italian guys look great in white jeans, they always wear any trouser option cropped and the results speak for themselves....

- Lightweight knitwear is a nice option. Soft Spring/ Summer hues are always a winner, but a navy crew-neck sweater is completely classic.

- Chambray/ Washed Denim shirts are perfect. The only time I would personally wear Denim on Denim.

Having recently purchased a great pair from REISS this season, I will post pictures of myself over the coming days sporting my favourite white denim looks. Watch this space, but in the meantime have a look at these great examples....

The Denim Shirt....

Regardless of what fashion dictates, 'Denim on Denim' is not a look I personally endorse or champion. Yes, within the pages of 'Vogue Homme' it looks great, but I continue to find it a hard look to carry off with success. That said, the Chambray Denim shirt is one of my new summer essentials!

The Denim shirt recalls Paul Newman and Steve McQueen, an All-American look with one foot in relaxed prep styling and the other in 50's 'Rockabilly' workwear. Personally I like the classic combination of sand coloured chino's or white jeans worn with a well tailored blazer, only dressed with a relaxed denim shirt underneath- Fantastic look! I would even push it far enough to throw a nice club-striped tie in the mix and give a more formal look a rugged twist. Watch this space for my own take on this summer wardrobe staple....

In the meantime, I found some great examples of Chambray worn properly (well, I think so anyway). Have a look, be inspired and think about how you could wear the Denim shirt this season....

Best Foot Forward....

The Brogue is a wonderful thing. Worn as well with jeans, chino's and almost any suit, it surely is a veritable classic that any man should own. The origin of the shoe can be traced back to Ireland and Scotland where it took on a more 'practical' role; The now familiar perforations across the front wingtip allowed water to drain out when crossing marsh land or working in the fields. In fact, the word brogue comes from a Gaelic translation 'Brog', an old Norse term 'Brok' meaning 'leg covering' i.e shoe!

These 'Jacob's' Brogues from REISS are an absolute must. Having moved on slightly from the ones I was sporting last Spring/ Summer, they are sturdier on the foot, beautifully finished and avalaibe in Tan (Chestnut brown), classic black and a dark oak shade. Seeing as we are launching into warmer weather I opted for the tan. These will feature in a post about the versatility of this stunning shoe soon....

Off the cuff....

We all know the age old debate of how much cuff should be shown when wearing a suit; An inch?, half an inch? Whatever your preference, I feel there isn't enough attention given to the same debate with knitwear. A very common combination all year round, and season to season, is the classic shirt and sweater (preferably Cashmere or Merino)- BUT not enough men seem to consider the impact and subtle sartorial expression a little bit of cuff protruding from your knitwear sleeve can have! What I wore today, In my humble opinion, is just right!

I recently took a trip to Selfridges in Birmingham where Robert Johnston (Associate GQ Editor) and Adam Kelly (Head of Menswear buying at Selfridges) were on hand to chat and offer style consultations. Amongst other things, we discussed the influence of 'Mad Men' on fashion, the real meaning of 'Sprezzatura' and how the guys in Rome apparently wear 'Monk' shoes. When about to ask what direction they thought my personal style should take this season, Mr Johnston simply said "Just keep doing whatever you are doing". A compliment from the very top!

I found these shots over at www.ostyleblog.com late last year. Olga Puga is the creator of this blog, predominantly focusing on ladieswear, it really does make for a great viewing experience- Colourful and stylish. The gentleman in these photo's really hits the nail on the head in the style stakes! This is, for me at least, the epitome of summer style. Classic, smart (yet relaxed) and chic- Exactly what spring and summer was made for. When I first saw this collection of images last year, the weather in the U.K had turned damp, cold and windy- All we had to look forward to was christmas. Well, although the weather is yet to deviate from winters grasp, we have the new season to look forward to, and the second the sun starts to shine THIS is the look I will be going for.

Sand coloured chino's- Check.
Crisp white shirt- Check.
Brown 'Monk' shoes- Check.

Style Graduates....

It would seem barely a month can pass without a new band dubbed the 'hot new things' come creeping into the press from whatever city/suburb/country they call home. Some of these bands have substance, style and great tunes....some simply don't. But, as with most things in life, there is no accounting for taste and we are all entitled to our own opinions. My opinion is this; Why do so many of these acts (remaining un-named) seem to emphasise their image above all else, namely talent! 80's new wave electronica with sprayed on jeans and 'angular' haircuts? No thanks. Well how about the next batch of scruffy looking Carl Barat pretenders in drain-pipes and winkle pickers? No, it's no longer 2003- move along please.

Anyway, I realise this is a subject I could ramble on about using many, many, many more words and examples, but I'm not the N.M.E (thank god!) so I will get to my point- Vampire weekend. Once the winter is done with and elements of the new season begin to creep through, I turn to my usual trusty films, books, records for style inspiration. It could be 'Taking Ivy' on paper or 'The Talented Mr Ripley' on celluloid, Vampire weekend are always on my Spring/ Summer playlist. Yes, we've heard it all, great band from New York City etc etc....but what about their style? I love the way they can epitomise east coast American style. Unashamedly 'preppy' blazers and pea coats washed down with chino's, deck shoes and enough pastel shades to make even the coldest months seem like summer. Top marks from me. I really am looking forward to the warmer months now....

It seems to me that the weather is starting to turn in our favour. Granted the streets are still wet, and on occasion the wind is biting, but for the most part the elements are getting milder. I expressed this time last year the importance of a good 'husky' jacket, and one year on I stand by it. My Barbour 'Chelsea Sports' quilted jacket is one of the most versatile pieces of outerwear you can own- I practically live in mine come rain or shine! Honestly, as perfect with a pair of jeans and brouges as it is with a shirt and tie, a good lightweight Barbour is an indispenable addition to any guys wardrobe. Great for colder times, you can layer up easily- I wear mine over a suit jacket or blazer! Great for warmer times also- You know those days when you leave the house on a brisk spring morning but as soon as it hits lunch time you step out into blazing sun? Well just fold it up into your bag. Easy. I admit the quilted jacket does seem to be in abundance on pretty much any high street in any city these days, but if worn with a splash of style then it really can be the height of British sartorial 'cool'.

This Prince of Wales check blazer, from REISS AW10, has been one of my favourite pieces of the last season. Completely versatile, it can be worn as well with a tie and smart trouser, as it can a fine merino V-neck and well fitting jeans! Made from a raw wool, the finish is a little rustic giving it a natural almost rough texture. Today I teamed it with the fine silk finish of this knitted tie, personally I think it makes quite an impression- Striking in a very natural and composed way.

On a side note, anyone who has seen the film 'An education' may notice this outfit is almost a blueprint of one Peter Sarsgaard wears in a couple of scenes- Perhaps a bit of random trivia, but I like it all the same!

While the above title may not be entirely true, it must be stated that guys in Rome sure seem to know how to wear tailoring. I love this Navy pinstripe suit, perfect with solid white shirt and understated tie. Obviously a formal look, but with the relaxed shoulder and 'shoved-in' pocket square, there is an air of effortless confidence on display here. Great stuff.

Sitting alongside films such as 'A Single Man', Lone Sherfig's 'An Education' (2009) is set in the very stylish early 60's. Based on the Nick Hornby novel, it's a fairly simple story of a young British girl seduced by the suave, and much older, David. Yet again, as well as being a suberb film, it's the style on display that steals the show! Tailored suits, slim ties and enough Brylcreem to open a barber shop with. Highly recommended.

Funnily enough, the blazer worn by Peter Sarsgaard above is almost an exact replica of the REISS Prince of Wales Checked one I have in my wardrobe- I will post a photo later this week....

It's very much january so I'm still relying on my brown 'Monk' style shoes from REISS to keep me ploughing through the drizzle soaked streets. Guys, you always need to take care of your shoes- remembering that women seem to forever be saying "You can tell a lot about a man by his....". True or not, the point actually is that so many guys let themselves down with shoddy, dull, scuffed footwear. Don't do this. You may also wish to think a little higher, not metaphorically, but more towards your ankle and choice of socks!

Put simply, the classic choice is always a good option; Navy suit= Navy socks. Grey suit with....you guessed it. But why not throw a brighter shade in there? You can even match your tie or pocket square, red tones work amazingly well with blue suits and brown shoes! I like to add a colourful splash to my tailored outfits, bright stripey Paul Smith ones always draw the eye as an unexpected flash of colour!

I have recently discovered some amazing Farisle socks from D.S Dundee- These will look great with jeans and brogues as well as adding interest to a more formal ensemble. If like me you are suffering with cold feet this winter, these will warm you up as well as looking fine on the ankle!

Expressly for you!

I have a routine in the morning, without doubt my favourite time of the day. Getting ready for work, having breakfast and drinking good coffee! I've very recently invested in this stove-top espresso maker from 'Bialetti'. These simple coffee pots have been in use for years and are commonplace in many households throughout Italy- I use mine everyday! Although not strictly related to my personal style, a good cup of espresso when starting the day makes me feel as well put together as any tailored blazer that I'm wearing (well, almost....).

I picked mine up from 'Carluccio's', but they are readily avaliable from several other outlets- Just look for the man with the moustache!

I came across this image a while ago. If I dress this well as I get older then something is surely going well! To me this personifies classic Italian style through the colder months. I love the attention to detail; black tie and shoes matching the leather gloves in his coat pocket, as well as the grey flannel trousers with a neat cuff at the ankle. This said, the highlight for me has to be the white pocket square at the chest- Is this not the perfect way of expressing sartorial flair even when covered up in a heavy camel overcoat? Amazing stuff....

I've just found this short film about Scott Schuman the writer/photographer of 'The Sartorialist'. I've always been quite open about my appreciation of this guy and his amazing body of work so this film offered a great insight into Scott's daily routine and motivation for his art. Enjoy.

'Up In The Air'....

Yet another film I cannot praise enough, 'Up In The Air' was released in 2009 and directed by Jason Reitman. It doesn't matter how much of the winter blues or January plague (like me!) you suffer from, I can never help but smile when this is on. Seeing as I am currently on the mend after being struck down with a bout of sickness, words seem to be escaping me at present- I did however want to give a quick nod towards how sharp George Clooney looks in the film. I especially love the 'Brooks Brothers' leather tie case he travels with!

I hope everyone has had a fantastic Christmas. Mine was brief but great all the same, and now I sit here on the eve of 2011 wondering what the next 12 months will hold? Well, be it good or bad, lets make it a stylish one. A new year for many means new promises to ourselves as well as others; saving money, quitting bad habits, learning to drive (ahem....) or getting fit for the summer. We all have our own thoughts, hopes and fears at this time of year, but this blog is 'The Gents Dresser' and NOT a forum for my own personal thoughts, so on to the matter in hand....

Whatever the new year brings our way, I intend to do it in style. How about kicking off 2011 with some pearls from Roger Sterling. Yes, the fictional mogul of Madison Avenue (who has been writing his memoirs throughout 'Mad Men' series 1-4) has published 'Sterling's Gold'- well, Television broadcasters A.M.C have. Not quite the autobiography you would expect, instead this is a collection of thoughts and witticisms about life accompanied by images from the series. Funny and at times thought provoking, 'Sterling's Gold' should certainly qualify as a gift to yourslef or a freind!

Hot Shots....

On a daily basis I see images that inform and inspire my own personal style. It could be a person past or present, a film, brand image or a place- but collectively, be it in a magazine, on screen or online, they are things that resonate and can leave quite an impression. Sometimes fleetingly, but also occasionally they stay with me, thus helping shape my own style as well as understanding other peoples.

My intention now is to also use 'The Gents Dresser' to share some of these images. An un-edited scrapbook of photo's that interest me on that particular day/week/month. I will continue to write and share my regular posts and pictures, but hope that instead of keeping these snaps of gentlemans related style to myself, that you too will gain the inspiration and enjoyment that I have! All style is plagarised from a particular era/person/designer- I would never try and insinuate my daily dress code has been conjured up out of my own sartorial ideology. NO! I look to others for the foundations and then dress accordingly to suit and express my own taste and personality.

Today has been cold, grey and....did I mention cold? I'm looking for some hits of colour....

Winter Tones....

Colour palettes for the Autumn/Winter season always lean towards browns and camels, as well as dark red and burgundy tones- they are warm, versatile and really striking when worn correctly. BUT take a minute to look outside your window- the scene I see is one of pale grey and light shades of blue- a TRUE reflection of the winter season. It escapes me how I stumbled across the image below, but I love what this gent is wearing! A subtle mix of texture and muted winter shades creates such an interesting outfit at this time of year. I assume it is as much fun to wear as it is eye-catching for the rest of us.

Whilst looking out of the window at a cold sky, white tinged buildings and frosted trees, I was moved to think about how far, and long ago, the warmer days of summer actually seem. I went back to some of the summer outfits I featured this year and looked at them next to examples I posted as the days grew colder....

I guess I just found it interesting to look at photos of summer outfits, that were only worn a few months ago, compared to the heavier ensembles the elements currently require! Not that I'm complaining. I am, after all, a trans-seasonal dresser!

The Sound Of 'Mad Men'....

I had an extra spring in my step today, largely due to the release of this download only compilation 'Mad Men: The soundtrack to their lives'. This 36 track collection captures the spirit of times gone by as well as the themes and mood of this spectacular television show. Including artists such as Sammy Davis Jr, Ella Fitzgerald and Dean Martin, these songs are best served with an 'Old Fashioned' in one hand as well as a sharp suit adorning your back....but if this isn't possible then it will work just fine on the early morning commute to work.

While we are on the subject, enjoy my gratuitous use of yet more imagery of Don Draper and co.

A Classic All Year Round....

I always post during the warmer months about how much I love a blue blazer and sand coloured chino. Classic. You really cannot go wrong with this ensemble, last season I certainly saw a lot guys getting on board with this. Yet I beleive the point of a wardrobe staple 'classic' item is that it can be worn anytime, regardless of the season.

This week we have been hit with freezing cold blasts of snow and ice- BUT I still can't resist donning a blue blazer and sand coloured trouser. The pair I'm wearing today are from REISS, made from a slightly heavier winter weight cotton (very warm!), its easy to keep the look seasonal with subtle touches by wearing a burnt orange pocket square and heavy wool tie in brown.

Come rain or shine, if its classic- wear it!

Keeping It Short....

Finally feeling better after a mild dose of flu, it's yet again time to freshen and sharpen up- that means a trip to the barber! To many it may seem random writing a post about hair, but for me this is as relevant as any outfit you put together. I always say that it's the details that require attention so why would you want to let yourself down with scruffy hair?

Finding a good barber is not an easy thing, but once you have you should find him (or her) indispensable. I visit once every 3 weeks for a no frills, no fuss tidy up. Personally, I like to have my sides and back taken very short with a pair of clippers, then blended into a number 2 blade remembering to leave the top and front with plenty of weight and length.

Add a touch of product (try old school DAX) and simply comb it back. Nice, clean and tight. Classic cut with literally NO fuss.

Mad Men Illustrated....

There has been a lack of updates lately- I seem to of been struck down by a seasonal fever that has left me lost for words, or at least unable to type them! What I have found to be a bright, bold rush of joy was this witty and smart illustrated volume by American artist Dyna Moe- 'Mad Men- The Illustrated World'. Taken her inspiration from series 1-3 of Mad Men, this is a fun collection of vintage tinged drawings of all the key characters doing what they do best.

Released this month, it's certainly worth a look (and a giggle!).

Get Knitted....

Autumn has peaked and winter is just around the corner, but you're not quite ready to break out the chunky knits, heavy layers and winter coats? Well if you want to add hints of the season into your wardrobe why not invest in some knitted ties. When the cold weather comes along, I love adding weight and texture to a smart and slick look by replacing my silk ties with some of the examples shown here (from my own wardrobe). Are you wearing a sharp wool/mohair mix suit? A knitted tie will contrast perfectly with the natural 'sheen' of your suit (in the same way silk ties work well with tweed suits). Or if you are sporting some corduroy or chino trousers with a heavy-weight blazer? A chunky winter weight tie will complete your look!

Often an over-looked, and essential in my opinion, addition to any mans winter collection. I go to REISS for mine, but Richard James offers some extrememly snazzy options as well! Trust me, they can really 'tie' an outfit together (couldn't resist it!)

In The Mix....

Monday morning was time to play with textures, as well as keeping warm- True navy suit, a seasonal tweed waistcoat (part of a different suit), burnt orange knitted tie and paisley pocket square in keeping with the colour palette.

A dark wool suit is perfect for wearing textured accessories with, this is why I went for bold and contrasting tones- you can see the key pieces, all anchored down with a crisp, white shirt (with classic 'spread' collar).

The British Connection....

So I've established myself as an avid follower of 'Mad Men'- BUT it has recently occured to me that all the time spent touting Don Draper as the man to watch, it would seem I've over looked English Gent Lane Pryce (Jared Harris). An unsung style guru for sure, not typically suave and handsome like Mr Draper, but very British in his choice of snazzy tailoring- I love the contrasting array of waistcoats, cardigans and V-neck sweaters he dons (bad joke there!) with his suits.

As a side note I want to add how much I love the above second picture- Checked blazer, tweed waistcoat and burnt orange tie- looks great (Christina Hendricks also). A style from 1965 that looks as current and seasonal today as ever before!

Style And Substance....

I know this is very old news, but I've only just recently sat myslef down to watch 'A Single Man', a film directed by Tom Ford and based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood. Not only is this movie enthralling, emotional and extremely well acted- it has to be one of the most stylish portrayals of dapper 1960's America I have ever seen ('Mad Men' fans will be impressed!). Set over the course of a day, Colin Firth takes lead as an English college professor, George Falconer, who is struggling to come to terms with the death of his partner some 8 months previous....I don't want to give the rest of the narrative details away if, like me, you are late in seeing this film. You must!

Being directed by Tom Ford, its easy to think that 'A Single Man' could be a lot of style with no substance, trust me it really isn't- although style is on view here in abundance. Sharp tailoring, cropped trousers, dapper hairstyles and 60's swagger is on view for all to see, but splice that with amazing use of colour and mood and you have what is simply one of the most interesting films I have ever seen.

N.B Its been a few weeks since I watched this- and it's taken me until now to really express my appreciation of 'A Single Man'. The story is great and well told, but the style (call me shallow) really is the winner for me. As a side note- the original score is one of the most beautiful recordings you could ever wish to here.

Morning freeze....

Wednesday morning I asked myself "could it get any colder?"- well of course it could, and certainly will. After grabbing an 'Americano', the sun was shining, the wind was biting but I love mornings like this! My colleauge grabbed me outside work and took a couple of shots (not posed for once-honest!) whilst discussing 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps'.

N.B Autumn/ Winter was made for a splash of Burberry....

'Take Ivy' was originally published in Japan sometime in 1965. This collection of photographs by Teruyoshi Hayashidan has become somewhat of a holy grail for style hungry guys for quite some time. A few original copies have been changing hands on ebay for literally hundreds of pounds, so you can thank the guys over at Powerhouse Publishing for the re-issue of this beautiful book.
It captures classic 'Prep' stylings on the guys who originally wore it- shots of actual students (NOT models) in the library, the canteen, walking across campus etc in some of the most classic and stylish American looks I've ever seen. Tweed blazers worn with ties and chinos, tailored shorts with loafers and socks- the list is endless. Have a look at some of the examples I've posted here, but I urge anyone who finds inspiration and/or pleasure in the 'Ivy League' look to invest in this publication- it truly is a gem.
